The risk
of an explosion within a dust environment, such as mills, extraction
plants etc, has necessitated an approval for equipment used
within these areas. The ATEX directive covers this requirement
and became mandatory, for new installations, in July 2003. Existing
equipment needed to conform by 2006.
SYNATEL
manufacture a range of sensors which are available now, all
of which carry the required approval. The sensor range includes: capacitive/capacitance
or inductive proximity sensors, available in 30mm dia. threaded
enclosures, capacitance or rotary level control sensors, 18mm dia. stopped motion monitor plus self contained
underspeed monitors, available as a 30mm threaded enclosure
version or a limit switch style package sensor.
None of the units require special cabling and are easy to install
and calibrate, where required. Synatel also manufactures a ATEX approved in-line enclosure (5 wire max) (SYNATEX D5M) suitable for use with all synatel sensors.

The various
units available consist of:
MiniCap
Capacitance Sensors
Two
wire design, working on supplies of 24-240V ac/dc and capable
of switching a load of 200mA.
5 wire design with relay outputs capable of switching 240Vac 3A
non-inductive, and working on supplies of 12-240V dc, 24-240V
ac.
Maximum operating range, for all versions, is 25mm.
Inductive Sensors
2 wire design, 30mm threaded body, working on 24-240V
ac/dc supplies and output of 200mA. Operating range is 12mm max.
4 wire design, 18mm threaded body, working on 10-30V dc supplies
and output of 30Vdc 100mA max.
Operating range is 9mm max.
Digimatic Capacitance Level Control
Working from supplies of 110/230V ac or 24V dc with
relay output. Incorporates 'power shield' for compensation of
material sticking to probe rod. Probes available in 100mm, 1000mm,
2000 solid rod or 10 metre wire rope and weight assembly.
Step-a-Matic
Rotary Level Control
Working from supplies between 90 & 260V ac or
24V dc with relay output. Incorporates patented stepper motor
drive, eradicating gearbox & clutch wear problems. Virtually
indestructible drive, rotating both forward & backward to
prevent material compaction, with electronic torque setting allowing
one paddle size to suit all applications.
Speed Monitors
Rotamatic/Rotaslip/Rotastop
Rotamatic: A limit switch style package underspeed monitor,
working on supplies of 12-240V dc, 24-240V ac with relay output.
Rotaslip: A 2 wire design underspeed monitor, 30mm threaded
enclosure working on 24-240V ac/dc and output of 200mA max. Also
available as a five wire with volt free relay change over contact
output 240V 2.5A max.
Above units signal a fault condition at 20% below set running
speed.
Rotastop: A 2 wire design stopped motion monitor in an
18mm threaded enclosure, working on 24-240V ac/dc with output
of 200mA max. A fault condition is occurs when input pulses stop
or fall below one every 4 seconds.
SynAtexD5M in-line Connector
Suitable for use in 1D/Zone20 areas and ideal for connecting
all Synatel & other sensors, up to a maximum of 5 cores. Full
ATEX approval, includes ATEX approved glands. Complete with fixing
bracket.
